Welcome to Seethawaka Botanical Garden
Seethawaka Botanical Garden or Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden situates in Ilukovita, Avissawella. It is the latest botanical gardens in Sri Lanka which conserve the threatened and vulnerable endemic plant species. Seethawaka garden is an excellent place to travel in the evening close to Colombo. The Seethawaka garden opened to the public in October 2014. The aim is to offer a new experience for local and foreign visitors regarding the threatened and vulnerable endemic plant species. You can see the endemic plants, which found in the Sinharaja rain forest. The garden spreads in 106 acres of land.
The garden is a well-maintained, beautiful, and great place for nature lovers with a relatively cool temperature. It is looking so amazing and covers up by Terminalia arjuna trees. You can see a beautiful stream that flows through the garden, feeding the wet zone plants. Also, it helps to promote bamboo cultivation.
You can see a Japanese garden, small and large water gardens, a Rose garden, a medicinal plant garden, Kumbuk cultivation, Fruit and Wet zone plant species at Seethawaka garden.
Make sure to bring some food items when you travel to this place because there is a lack of shops in this area. But there is a small cafe inside the garden. It helps you with snacks or tea. Also, there are many locations where you can settle for a picnic. Make sure not to leave any garbage in the garden and help to keep this place clean.
There are toilet facilities inside the garden. Also, this place is an ideal place for wedding photography and pre shoots. They allow you to take photos using your camera. But if you are doing a commercial photoshoot, it will charge Rs. 5,000/- for your camera.
History of Seethawaka Botanical Garden
In the 20th century, Seethawaka Botanical Garden started as a plantation area for Rubber and Tea. The concept of commencement of the Seethawaka Botanical garden came in 2008. It opened to the public in October 2014.
The Beauty of the Seethawaka Botanical Garden
You can walk around the garden comfortably. The way around the park has created using stone. That paths direct you to the summit of the garden. You can observe the surrounding area to the top. You can easily find the routes since the information maps are available. The Seethawaka garden is a paradise for photographers. You can have beautiful photographs.
This garden is not like the botanical garden of Peradeniya or Haggala with various flowers. But few flower beds add beauty to this Seethawaka park. You will find the rose garden at the peak of the hill. On your way, you can watch ducks and other birds. It will be a soothing sight for you. Also, there are many fish and a few turtles in the pond where the path ends. Don’t forget to look at them.
You can see that lots of trees in this garden. Most of them have name boards. So, you can identify the various trees and plants while enjoying the scenery. Do not forget to see the pretty and rare flowers and ferns on your way. This garden is still growing. So, you can see some recently planted trees. I think that they need some time to grow and show their beauty.
An Ideal Place for a Picnic
Once you enter the garden, you can choose the golf cart to go around the Botanical garden. But I recommend you to walk instead is best. If you want to use carts, you need to make the payment at the entrance.
Peddle Boat Ride at Seethawaka Botanical Garden
As a visitor, you can enjoy and relax with a boat ride at Seethawaka garden. There is an artificial lake inside the Seethawaka garden, which built using natural water flow. If you like a boat ride, make sure to buy tickets at the entrance.

Seethawaka Botanical Garden locates on Puwakpitiya-Thummodara road, close to the Indikada Mukalana Forest Reserve.
If you drive from Colombo, it will take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. One of the routes to reach Seethawaka garden is that taking the turn from Puwakpitiya station. When you drive from Colombo to Avissawella via high-level road, you will find the Puwakpitiya station on your left-hand side. You can turn right from the next junction and reach Puwakpitiya-Thummodara road. You have to travel nearly 3 km. Then you can easily find the Seethawaka Botanical Garden by your right-hand side.
Seethawaka Garden is open all day. The opening hours are from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. You can contact the park authorities via Telephone. Contact number is 036-379-5295.
You need to purchase tickets before entering the garden. At the entrance, they have provided parking and hygiene facilities. Visitors need to buy the tickets for the swan boat ride at the entrance gate.
Best Time to Visit Seethawaka Garden
We were at the entrance before they open the gate to the public. So, we took a chance to enjoy the cool air and the morning beauty. At that time, there were fewer people there. It gets very crowded during weekends and holidays. So, we recommend you visit during a weekday.
